The Between Darkness & Light Candle represents the journey from what is unknown toward what can be understood—a central theme within Masonic symbolism and initiatory philosophy.

At the summit sit two contrasting guardians: the black raven and white owl. These are artistic esoteric additions rather than universal Masonic emblems. The raven represents mystery, observation, and knowledge concealed within darkness, while the owl represents wisdom, discernment, and the ability to perceive what others may overlook. Together they embody two ways of approaching the unknown: to seek and to understand.

Between them, the partially illuminated Moon captures the central message of the composition. Darkness and Light exist simultaneously. What remains concealed is not necessarily absent; it may simply have not yet been revealed.

The Sun and Moon below reinforce the relationship between opposing yet complementary forces—day and night, revelation and concealment, action and contemplation.

The great pillars open into a long Temple passage laid with the familiar black-and-white mosaic pavement, a recognizable element of Masonic lodge symbolism representing the contrasting conditions encountered throughout human existence.

At the end of the passage waits Light.

The distance between the entrance and that illuminated destination is significant. The seeker must cross the pavement, pass between the pillars, and continue forward. Knowledge is approached through progression rather than immediate revelation.

In the foreground, the Square and Compasses rest upon a book, joining the concepts of moral measurement with study and accumulated knowledge. The white lily introduces purity of intention and renewal, while the hourglass delivers the final lesson: the opportunity to pursue wisdom exists within the boundaries of time.

This candle asks the seeker to recognize that darkness and Light are not simply enemies.

Darkness presents the Mystery.
Knowledge provides the Tools.
Wisdom teaches their use.
Time demands that the journey begin.
And the seeker continues toward the Light.
