The Raven & the Memento Mori Candle explores one of the deeper philosophical themes found within Masonic tradition: the contemplation of mortality and the responsibility to use one’s time wisely.

At the center rests the human skull, a traditional memento mori—Latin for “remember that you must die.” Within Masonic contexts, skull and mortality imagery can serve as reminders of human impermanence, encouraging serious reflection upon one’s conduct, obligations, and the legacy created during life.

The raven watches from above. While the raven is not a universal or standard emblem of Freemasonry, here it is deliberately incorporated as an esoteric symbol of intelligence, observation, mystery, and passage between darkness and understanding. Its presence complements the candle’s meditation on what is hidden, what is learned, and what remains when the superficial is stripped away.

Beneath the skull appear the Square and Compasses alongside the plumb, grounding the artwork unmistakably in Masonic symbolism. The working tools speak of measurement, restraint, uprightness, and the continual construction of character.

The surrounding pillars suggest the symbolic temple, while the Sun, Moon, stars, and lunar progression contrast human mortality with the greater cycles continuing beyond an individual lifetime.

The skull does not simply represent death.

It asks a more important question:

Knowing that your time is finite, what will you build with it?

The answer is represented beneath it—the tools of the builder.
